A group of hackers known as “Anonymous Sudan” has claimed responsibility for attacking the websites of several Israeli media outlets, including i24NEWS, Kan Public Broadcaster, The Jerusalem Post, and Channel 12.
The attack came less than a day after the same hacker group targeted several major universities across Israel, causing their websites to go down for several hours.
In a statement posted on their Telegram account, the hackers said the attack was in retaliation for what Israel did in Palestine and threatened to carry out another major attack on April 7.
This cyberattack against Israeli media and universities is the latest in a series of attacks by cybercriminals.
Earlier this year, in February, a group of hackers attacked the Technion Institute in Haifa, demanding a ransom of several million shekels. The Israeli authorities later established that Iran was behind the attack. Such cyber attacks, particularly those launched by state-sponsored groups, have become increasingly common in recent years.
The Israeli government has taken steps to protect its institutions from cyber threats, including establishing a national cybersecurity agency, the National Cyber Directorate, in 2015. The agency is responsible for identifying and mitigating cyber threats, and has been successful in preventing many cyber attacks.
However, despite these efforts, cyber attacks remain a significant threat to Israeli security, particularly as more and more aspects of modern life become digitized.
