Dish Network has confirmed that the multi-day network and service outage that started on Friday was caused by a ransomware attack. The attack affected Dish.com, the Dish Anywhere app, Boost Mobile, and other websites and networks owned and operated by the company.
The TV giant admitted that threat actors stole data from its compromised systems, potentially containing personal information belonging to its employees and customers.
In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Dish Network revealed that it has notified the relevant law enforcement authorities about the attack and is working with cyber-security experts and outside advisers to contain, assess, and remediate the attack’s impact.
The company also said that it expects to incur significant costs related to the cyber-attack, but it is not yet able to estimate the amount of such costs.
While the company’s website is still affected by the outage, its employees have reported being kept in the dark, with the company sharing little information about what is happening.
Customers are also reporting issues with service, including interrupted service, freezing, and other glitches. The situation highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and transparency in response to cyber-attacks to minimize the potential impact on stakeholders.
