Lansing Community College (LCC) has cancelled all classes and activities for two days due to an ongoing cyber attack. LCC posted a tweet stating that the cancellation of all college classes, events, practices, and activities will take place immediately and will continue through March 16 and 17.
Only employees with the school’s police, IT, payroll, incident management, facilities, academy, and aviation departments should report for work. LCC has approximately 9,500 students.
This is not the first time that schools in the United States have fallen victim to cyber attacks.
Last September, the South Redford School District cancelled classes for two days after its computer system was infiltrated. The attack happened weeks after federal officials warned of an increase in attacks against schools across the country.
In November, a similar attack targeted the Jackson County Intermediate School District and Hillsdale Community District Schools.
Such attacks have serious consequences, including the loss of valuable data and the disruption of education.
Hackers are becoming more sophisticated and aggressive, making it necessary for organizations to take cybersecurity seriously.
This latest attack on LCC emphasizes the need for educational institutions to have robust cybersecurity measures in place to protect their networks from malicious cyber activity.
